The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this division, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

Blackjack includes any billy, sand club, sandbag or other hand-operated striking weapon consisting, at the striking end, of an encased piece of lead or other heavy substance and, at the handle end, a strap or springy shaft which increases the force of impact.

Blowgun means any tube designed to be used or which is used to impel a dart or other projectile by the force of breath.

Deadly weapon means any of the following which in the manner it is used or intended to be used is capable of producing bodily injury:

(1) A firearm, whether loaded or unloaded.

(2) A knife.

(3) A bludgeon.

(4) Any other weapon, device, instrument, material, or substance, whether animate or inanimate.

Firearm means any handgun, semiautomatic, revolver, pistol, rifle, shotgun, or other instrument or device capable or intended to be capable of discharging shots, bullets, cartridges, or other explosive charges.

Gas gun means a device designed for projecting gas-filled projectiles which release their contents after having been projected for the device and includes projectiles designed for use in such a device.

Gravity knife means any knife that has a blade released for the handle or sheath thereof by the force of gravity or application of centrifugal force, that when released is locked in place by means of a button, spring, lever or other device.

Handgun means any lawful weapon (including a starter gun) which is designed to or may be readily converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive charge, has a short stock and is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand.

Illegal weapon means:

(1) A blackjack, gas gun, metallic knuckles, gravity knife, switchblade knife.

(2) Any instrument or device which an individual of reasonable caution and mentality would not ascertain upon viewing is, in fact, designed to be used or capable of being used as a weapon.

Juvenile means any person who has not attained 18 years of age.

Knife means any dagger, dirk, knife, or stiletto with a blade over 3½ inches in length, or any other dangerous instrument, capable of inflicting cutting, stabbing, or tearing wounds, but does not include a hunting or fishing knife carried for sports use. The issue that a knife is a hunting or fishing knife which is being carried for sports use at the time of the alleged violation must be raised as an affirmative defense.

Nunchaku means an instrument consisting of two or more sticks, clubs, bars or rods to be used as handles, connected by a rope, cord, wire or chain, in the design of a weapon used in connection with the practice of a system of self-defense such as karate.

Restricted ammunition means any caliber projectile which is coated or treated with Teflon or similar type synthetic chemical compound. This definition includes projectiles commonly known as the KTW bullets.

Switchblade knife means any knife, the blade of which opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a butt, spring or other device in its handle.

Throwing star means any flat, metallic object, formed in the shape of a star, including extended and divided stars, with each point sharpened and to be projected or thrown through the air by the application of physical force by the possessor. Throwing stars are also known as Japanese or Korean stars, senbangs or shurikens.

Travel shall be as defined in Webster's II New Riverside University Dictionary (1988); "to move from one place to another." (Code 1979, § 27-110; Ord. No. 2010-24, § 2, 7-12-2010)
