(a) Design requirements. The requirements of this article shall regulate the design of building envelopes for adequate sound insulation and the design of mechanical systems for new construction in the designated noise impact areas and districts.

(b) Design methods. It is intended that these requirements provide flexibility to permit the use of innovative approaches, techniques and materials to achieve effective sound insulation. These requirements are formulated to permit compliance with the intent of this article by use of the three following methods:

(1) Method I. Is a prescriptive method which defines minimum construction requirements in terms of exterior wall and roof construction, exterior wall and attic insulation, and STC rating of windows and doors, and the configuration of vents for gas appliances and other venting appliances. No design calculations are required in this method. See section 22-429.

(2) Method II. Building design by analysis using the OITL Rating Method. See section 22-430.

(3) Method III. Achieving a specified performance level of sound insulation to be verified by actual testing of the building shell upon completion of construction. See section 22-431.

(c) HVAC requirements. Regardless of which design method is used, the HVAC requirements of section 22-432 must be met. (Ord. No. 2011-07, § 3, 4-11-2011; Ord. No. 2006-78, § 1(Exh. A), 1-8-2007)
