Section R311.2 of the IRC adopted in 22-181 is amended by adding the following:

(a) Every exterior door from any individual dwelling unit or guestroom of a group R occupancy, except hotels and motels shall be equipped with a deadbolt unless prohibited by the fire code. For purposes of this section any door between the main dwelling unit and an attached garage shall be deemed to be an exterior door, requiring the installation of a deadbolt. A deadbolt, as defined in this section, shall be deemed to be a lockbolt which does not have a spring action. The deadbolt required by this section shall be designed to be actuated by a key from the exterior and a knob or thumb turn from the interior.

(b) Exterior sliding glass doors in group R occupancies, except hotels and motels, shall be equipped with either a locking bar device or a pin or bolt device.

(c) No deadbolt or other security device shall be mounted or installed at a height in excess of 48 inches above the finished floor.

(d) This section shall not prohibit the optional installation of additional types of security devices such as night latches and security chains as provided for in the building code adopted in section 22-131.

This section will apply to all applicable structures on which building permits are issued on or after September 1, 1983. (Ord. No. 2011-02, § 28, 2-28-2011)
